Hello, fellow art enthusiasts!

I’m thrilled to share one of my favorite projects I repeat every year. Using watercolors, my first grade students crafted vibrant seascapes that capture the beauty and mystery of the ocean.

Project Overview

For this project, our focus was on exploring underwater habitats and the various creatures that inhabit them. The students learned about different sea animals, plants, and the unique characteristics of the ocean environment. With this knowledge, they set out to create their own watercolor seascapes.

Duration: 2 days (1st day drawing & outline, 2nd day painting)

Materials Used

  • Watercolor paints (we used Crayola)
  • Watercolor paper
  • Black markers (for outlining)
  • Brushes
  • Water cups

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Sketching the Scene: We started with simple pencil sketches on watercolor paper. The students drew submarines, sea animals, coral reefs, and more, ensuring they included a variety of elements in their seascapes.
  2. Outlining with Marker: Once the sketches were complete, the students outlined their drawings with black markers. This step helped define the different parts of their artwork and added a bold contrast to the final pieces.
  3. Wax Resist: For small details, students were encouraged to color with crayon because watercolor painting is so fluid and harder to control.
  4. Adding Color: The fun part! Students used watercolor paints to bring their scenes to life.
  5. Finishing Touches: After the paint dried, some students added additional details or touch-ups to make their seascapes even more vibrant.

Learning Objectives

  • Creativity: Encouraging students to use their imagination to create unique underwater scenes.
  • Color Theory: Teaching students how to blend and mix colors effectively.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Practicing precise brushstrokes and outlines.

Stay Creative,

Brianna
